Which astronaut commanded Apollo 12, the second crewed mission to land on the Moon?

The story behind the answer

Charles Conrad commanded Apollo 12, the second crewed mission to land on the Moon.

Apollo 12 launched on 14 November 1969, several months after Apollo 11. Conrad, Alan Bean, and Richard Gordon formed the crew. Conrad and Bean landed in the Ocean of Storms while Gordon remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module.

The lunar module landed close to the Surveyor 3 spacecraft, an uncrewed probe that had reached the Moon in 1967. Conrad and Bean inspected Surveyor 3 and removed parts for examination on Earth. Their mission demonstrated that later lunar landings could be targeted with much greater precision than the first landing.

Conrad was also a veteran of Project Gemini and had flown Gemini 5 and Gemini 11. The astronaut’s name is often written as Pete Conrad, but Charles “Pete” Conrad Jr. was his full name. Alan Bean was the lunar module pilot, not the mission commander.
