Which astronaut became the first person to walk on the Moon?

The story behind the answer

Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission. He stepped onto the lunar surface on July 20, 1969, after guiding the Lunar Module Eagle to its landing.

Armstrong had previously flown Gemini 8, where he and David Scott achieved the first docking of two spacecraft in orbit. Before becoming an astronaut, he was a naval aviator and a test pilot.

On the Moon, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent about two and a half hours outside Eagle. They photographed the surface, collected samples and deployed scientific equipment, including a laser-ranging retroreflector.

A frequent confusion is with Yuri Gagarin, who was the first human in space, or Buzz Aldrin, who was the second person to walk on the Moon. Armstrong was first on the lunar surface.
