Matty Cash played Désiré Doué onside for Paris Saint-Germain’s winning goal in the 2026 UEFA Super Cup.
Doué’s 61st-minute finish was first ruled out for offside. After a VAR review, the officials determined that Cash’s position meant Doué was legally onside when the pass was made. The goal was therefore awarded, putting Paris Saint-Germain 2–1 ahead.
Cash was playing for Aston Villa, who had entered the match as the 2025–26 UEFA Europa League winners. Paris were the Champions League holders, so the fixture brought together the reigning champions of UEFA’s two principal men’s club competitions.
The incident illustrates why an offside decision can change after video review: the relevant question is the exact position of the attacking player and the last defender at the instant the ball is played. Here, the final ruling credited the goal to Doué and identified Cash as the defender keeping him onside.
