Asteroid 55 Pandora is the asteroid numbered 55 and named after Pandora from Greek mythology.
American astronomer George Mary Searle discovered Pandora on 10 September 1858 at the Dudley Observatory in Albany, New York. It was the 55th asteroid to receive a permanent number, and its name connects it with the mythological Pandora associated with the famous container.
Pandora is a relatively small main-belt asteroid, although its exact size is difficult to determine because its shape and surface reflectivity affect estimates. It should not be confused with the similarly named moon Pandora, which orbits Saturn. The asteroid also differs from 2 Pallas, 4 Vesta, and other early numbered asteroids whose names come from Greek or Roman mythology.
