Which asteroid is generally considered the largest Jupiter trojan?
Answer
624 Hektor
Answer
624 Hektor
624 Hektor is generally considered the largest Jupiter trojan. It shares Jupiter’s orbit near a stable Lagrange point, making it one of the vast population of asteroids that travel ahead of or behind Jupiter rather than orbiting in the main asteroid belt.
Hektor is unusual in both shape and structure. It is highly elongated and is probably a contact binary: two bodies touching or merged together. It also has a small moon, Skamandrios. Because its dark surface reflects very little sunlight, estimates of its size have varied considerably, but modern measurements still place it among the largest known Jupiter trojans.
The asteroid was discovered by August Kopff at Heidelberg Observatory on 10 February 1907 and was named after Hector, the Trojan hero of Greek mythology. That name can cause a minor mix-up: Hektor occupies the Greek, or leading, swarm of Jupiter trojans, even though its name comes from the Trojan side of the mythological war.
617 Patroclus is another famous Jupiter trojan because it is a binary system, but it is not the largest. 624 Hektor remains the standard answer in astronomy references and general-knowledge quizzes.
