The Asian country whose flag displays the takbir in green on a red, white, and black tricolor is Iraq.
The Arabic inscription reads Allahu Akbar, meaning “God is the greatest.” It is written in green Kufic script across the central white stripe. The flag’s three horizontal bands—red, white, and black—come from the Arab Liberation Flag design associated with the Egyptian Revolution and later adopted across parts of the Arab world.
Iraq introduced this basic tricolor in 1963, although the wording and symbols changed several times. Saddam Hussein added the takbir in 1991 during the Gulf War era. In 2008, Iraq adopted the current version, retaining the green inscription but removing the three green stars that had appeared beside it on earlier versions.
The design is easy to confuse with other Arab flags, especially Syria and Egypt, which also use red, white, and black bands. However, Iraq’s current flag is distinguished by the green Kufic takbir centered on the white band.
