Jakarta was the Asian capital formerly known as Batavia.

Jakarta is Indonesia’s capital and largest city, located on the northwest coast of the island of Java. The settlement has carried several names over its long history. It was known as Sunda Kelapa, became Jayakarta in the 16th century, and was renamed Batavia after the Dutch East India Company established control in the early 17th century.

Batavia became the administrative center of the Dutch East Indies and an important trading port. Dutch planners built canals, warehouses and fortified districts, many of whose remnants survive in the area now called Kota Tua, or Old Town Jakarta.

During the Japanese occupation in World War II, the city was renamed Jakarta. The name continued after Indonesian independence, and the city was officially known as Jakarta rather than Batavia by 1949. Batavia should not be confused with other places using the historical name, including Batavia in the Netherlands.
