Which Asian capital is home to the Tokyo Skytree? Tokyo. The tower stands in Sumida, one of Tokyo’s eastern wards, and is both a broadcasting tower and a major observation attraction.

Tokyo Skytree was built to improve digital television coverage across the Kantō region. Tokyo Tower, completed in 1958, had become less effective as surrounding high-rises blocked signals, so a much taller structure was planned. Construction began in 2008, the tower was completed on 29 February 2012, and it opened to visitors on 22 May that year.

At 634 metres, Skytree is Japan’s tallest structure. Its name is sometimes confused with Tokyo Tower, but they are separate landmarks: Tokyo Tower is the older red-and-white tower near central Tokyo, while Skytree rises in Sumida near the Sumida River and Asakusa area.

The height was chosen partly for a wordplay-friendly Japanese reading: 634 can be pronounced “mu-sa-shi,” evoking Musashi, the historic name associated with the region around modern Tokyo. The complex also includes Tokyo Solamachi shops and Sumida Aquarium.
