Faisal Mosque is Pakistan’s national mosque, standing at the northern end of Faisal Avenue against the Margalla Hills. It was named for King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, who supported Pakistan’s plan for a major national mosque and provided crucial funding.

Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay designed the mosque after an international competition held in 1969. Its modern form deliberately avoids the traditional large dome: the main prayer hall resembles a Bedouin tent and is framed by four tall minarets. Construction began in 1976, and the mosque was completed in 1986, although its first prayer was held in 1988.
