Sturgill Simpson won Best Country Album at the 2017 Grammys for A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.

The album is a concept record written as a message from a sailor to his wife and child. Simpson combined country songwriting with orchestral arrangements, psychedelic textures, and soul influences, giving the record a broader sound than conventional country production.

A Sailor’s Guide to Earth was Simpson’s third studio album and became his first Grammy-winning project. Its emotional center is family separation and the experience of returning home after travel.

The album is sometimes confused with Chris Stapleton’s Traveller, which won Best Country Album at the 2016 Grammys. Simpson’s victory came one year later, at the 59th ceremony.
