OutKast won the 2004 Grammy for Album of the Year with Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.
The release is a double album that presents separate discs by the duo’s two members. Big Boi’s Speakerboxxx emphasizes Southern hip-hop, funk, and bass-heavy production, while André 3000’s The Love Below explores soul, pop, funk, jazz, and experimental songwriting.
The project produced major hits including “The Way You Move” and “Hey Ya!” Both songs reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, with each member receiving a prominent spotlight.
OutKast became the first hip-hop act to win Album of the Year with this release. The victory is different from the separate Grammy for Best Rap Album, which the duo also received for Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.
