Seal won the 1996 Grammy Award for Record of the Year with “Kiss from a Rose.”
Seal wrote and recorded the song, which first appeared on his 1994 album Seal II. It became a much larger international hit after being included on the soundtrack of the 1995 superhero film Batman Forever.
The recording’s dramatic vocal, layered harmonies, and orchestral arrangement helped it stand out from much of the mid-1990s pop landscape. Its renewed success after the film exposure led to several Grammy wins at the 1996 ceremony.
Seal also won Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for the song. The song’s connection to Batman Forever sometimes leads people to credit the film or its star, but the Grammy Record of the Year winner was Seal as the recording artist.
