Carrie Underwood won Best Female Country Vocal Performance at the 2008 Grammys for “Before He Cheats.” The song was written by Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins and recorded by Underwood for her 2005 debut studio album, Some Hearts. It was later released as the album’s fourth single.
“Before He Cheats” became one of Underwood’s signature songs, built around a dramatic revenge narrative in which a woman imagines retaliating against an unfaithful partner. Its combination of country storytelling, rock-influenced production and a forceful vocal helped it cross into mainstream pop culture. The single became a major commercial hit and earned multiple awards beyond the Grammys.
At the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, Underwood won a competitive field that included Alison Krauss, Miranda Lambert, LeAnn Rimes and Trisha Yearwood. The category title referred to solo female country performances; it was later discontinued after the 2011 awards as Grammy categories were reorganized. From 2012 onward, solo country recordings competed in the broader Best Country Solo Performance category.
