Which artist sculpted the Met's cast of 'The Burghers of Calais'?

The story behind the answer

Which artist sculpted the Met’s cast of “The Burghers of Calais”? Auguste Rodin sculpted it.

Rodin developed the monument between 1884 and 1895 for the French city of Calais. It commemorates six leading citizens who volunteered to surrender themselves to England’s king during the Hundred Years’ War, hoping to end the siege of their city. Rather than showing triumphant heroes, Rodin portrayed them burdened by fear, grief, and uncertainty.

The Met’s bronze is a later cast, produced in 1985 by the Coubertin Foundry from Rodin’s plaster model. It entered the Museum through a gift from Iris and B. Gerald Cantor in 1989 and is displayed in the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts galleries.

A common mix-up is treating the Met’s version as the one original sculpture. Bronze allows multiple authorized casts; the first bronze was installed in Calais, while other casts are held in cities including Paris, London, Copenhagen, and New York.
