Which artist made 'The Dinner Party'?

The story behind the answer

The artist who made “The Dinner Party” was Judy Chicago. This landmark installation is a monumental work of feminist art, created between 1974 and 1979 through Chicago’s direction and the contributions of numerous volunteers and craftspeople.

The work consists of a triangular table with 39 place settings, each honoring a significant woman from history, mythology, or literature. Each setting includes a decorated plate, embroidered textile, utensils, and a goblet. The plates often feature brightly colored butterfly- or flower-like forms, imagery associated with female anatomy and creative power.

Beneath the table is the Heritage Floor, made from thousands of porcelain tiles inscribed with the names of 998 women and one man mistakenly included because of a historical misunderstanding. The installation first attracted controversy but later became a central work in feminist art history. It is now permanently displayed at the Brooklyn Museum’s Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.

A common mix-up is assuming that the women depicted on the table are portraits or that Chicago made every component herself. The project was deliberately collaborative and also elevated traditionally domestic techniques such as embroidery and china painting.
