Which artist is known for drip painting?

The story behind the answer

Jackson Pollock is the artist most famously known for drip painting.

Pollock was an American painter and a major figure in Abstract Expressionism. In his best-known method, he placed large canvases on the studio floor and dripped, poured, splashed, or flicked liquid paint across them. Instead of working only from an easel, he moved around the canvas, using his whole body and tools such as sticks, hardened brushes, and basting syringes.

His most famous drip paintings were made during the period from 1947 to 1950. Works such as Autumn Rhythm and Number 17A show dense networks of lines and pools of colour rather than conventional figures or landscapes. The technique is also associated with action painting, which emphasizes the physical process of making the work.

Pollock did not invent every form of paint dripping. Artists including Max Ernst and Janet Sobel experimented with related methods, and Sobel’s work influenced Pollock. Nevertheless, Pollock made the technique internationally famous, so he is the canonical answer in a general-knowledge quiz.
