Pollock became closely identified with drip painting during the late 1940s. Instead of applying paint to an upright canvas with a conventional brush, he often placed large canvases on the studio floor and dripped, poured, splashed, or flicked paint across them. This let him move around all four sides of the work and treat the entire surface as an active field.

His materials were also unconventional: he frequently used thinned household or industrial enamel paint, along with sticks, hardened brushes, and basting syringes. The method made gravity, viscosity, gesture, and chance visible, but Pollock still controlled the pace and direction of his movements. Critics linked the approach to “action painting” and “all-over painting.”

A common mix-up is assuming Pollock invented every form of drip painting. Earlier artists, including Max Ernst and Janet Sobel, experimented with related methods. Even so, Pollock made the technique his signature and turned it into one of the defining images of Abstract Expressionism.
