Which artist is credited with designing Pikachu for the Pokémon franchise?

The story behind the answer

Atsuko Nishida is credited with designing Pikachu for the Pokémon franchise.

Pikachu was developed during the creation of the original Pokémon games and became one of the series’ defining characters. Nishida created the character’s design, while Ken Sugimori produced the finalized official artwork used across the early games and promotional material. The design combines a small mammalian body with large ears, red cheek pouches, and a lightning-bolt-shaped tail.

Pikachu was not originally guaranteed to become Pokémon’s mascot. The anime production team selected Pikachu as Ash’s partner partly because it could appeal broadly to different viewers and because it was visually distinctive. The anime then greatly increased Pikachu’s international recognition.

A common mistake is crediting Sugimori alone because his artwork is so closely associated with the franchise. Sugimori was the lead artist and a major designer across Pokémon, but specific credit for Pikachu’s original character design is given to Atsuko Nishida.
