Which artist is credited with creating Pikachu’s original design?

Atsuko Nishida is credited with creating Pikachu’s original design.

Nishida was a graphic artist working with Game Freak during development of the first Pokémon games. She designed Pikachu as a small, appealing Electric-type creature, while Ken Sugimori later produced the official artwork used to represent the character across the franchise.

Pikachu was not initially guaranteed to become Pokémon’s central mascot. Clefairy was also considered for a prominent role, but Pikachu’s design appealed strongly to a broad audience. The anime then made Pikachu Ash’s partner, giving the character an even larger international profile.

The credit is often attributed entirely to Sugimori because his illustrations became the best-known official images. However, design creation and final promotional artwork were different parts of the process. Nishida’s role is specifically associated with the original character design.
