Which artist designed Pikachu for the original Pokémon games?
Answer
Atsuko Nishida
Answer
Atsuko Nishida
Atsuko Nishida designed Pikachu for the original Pokémon games.
Nishida was a Game Freak artist who was asked to create a cute Electric-type Pokémon for Pokémon Red and Green. Her design became Pikachu, one of the most recognizable characters in video-game history. Ken Sugimori later finalized the artwork used in the games, which is why both artists are sometimes associated with Pikachu’s creation.
Nishida has explained that the early concept drew on a squirrel rather than a conventional mouse. The design included cheek pouches that could store electricity, helping establish Pikachu’s signature red cheeks and Electric typing.
Pikachu’s appearance changed over time. The earliest game artwork was rounder and heavier, while the anime and later games gave Pikachu a slimmer silhouette. Nishida also designed other Pokémon, including Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle.
