Which artist created the illustrated book series Hokusai Manga?

The story behind the answer

Katsushika Hokusai created the illustrated book series Hokusai Manga.

Hokusai Manga was published in multiple volumes beginning in 1814, when Hokusai was already an established artist. The books contain thousands of drawings showing people, animals, plants, landscapes, occupations, religious subjects, mythical beings, and scenes of everyday life. They were produced as affordable illustrated books rather than as a single narrative comic.

The word manga in the title is often translated as “random pictures” or “whimsical sketches.” Its meaning in Hokusai’s time did not exactly match the modern sense of manga as serialized comics. The series nevertheless became an important reference point in the later history of Japanese visual culture.

Hokusai Manga is also frequently mistaken for a collection of preparatory drawings for Hokusai’s prints. Most images were intended as independent study or entertainment pictures, although they also demonstrate Hokusai’s interest in teaching visual form and movement.
