Marc Chagall created the America Windows for the Art Institute of Chicago.

The America Windows are a group of seven stained-glass panels presented by Chagall to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1977. The artist conceived them as a celebration of the United States’ cultural life, with imagery connected to music, dance, theatre, literature, and visual art. Their brilliant colours and floating figures reflect characteristics associated with Chagall’s broader artistic language.

Chagall worked with the French stained-glass workshop Atelier Simon Marq in Reims. The windows were installed in a special gallery at the museum and later conserved before being displayed again.

The project is distinct from Chagall’s earlier stained-glass commissions, including the windows at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem and the Peace Window at the United Nations in New York. Those works also use symbolic colour and dreamlike imagery, but the America Windows were made specifically for Chicago’s major art museum.
