Which artist created Pikachu for the Pokémon franchise?

The story behind the answer

Atsuko Nishida created Pikachu for the Pokémon franchise.

Nishida designed Pikachu at the request of lead designer Ken Sugimori during development of the first Pokémon games. Sugimori later finalized the design for its in-game artwork. Pikachu was conceived as a cute, appealing Electric-type creature and became one of the franchise's most recognizable characters.

Pikachu first appeared in the Pokémon video games Pokémon Red and Blue, although the original Japanese releases were Red and Green. The character's name combines Japanese sound-symbolic elements associated with sparkling electricity and a mouse's squeak. Its visual design includes yellow fur, red cheek pouches, and a lightning-bolt-shaped tail.

Pikachu was not initially guaranteed to become the franchise mascot. Clefairy was considered alongside it for promotional prominence, but Pikachu's popularity with children and its appeal across genders helped it emerge as the anime's central partner Pokémon. Its role beside Ash greatly increased its visibility in games, television, films, cards, and merchandise.
