Jeff Koons created Balloon Dog, the monumental stainless-steel sculpture resembling a twisted party balloon.
Koons developed the work as part of his Celebration series, begun in the 1990s. The sculpture is made from highly polished stainless steel with a transparent color coating, giving it the appearance of a fragile inflated balloon while making it physically durable.
Several versions exist in different colors, including blue, magenta, yellow, orange, and red. The design combines the scale of a public monument with the familiar form of a child’s party decoration.
Balloon Dog is often described as playful, but its production involved complex engineering and industrial fabrication. It should not be confused with Koons’s Balloon Rabbit, another Celebration-series sculpture with a different animal form. The work helped make Koons one of the most visible figures in late twentieth-century and contemporary art.
