Which artist became famous for the work "The Birds of America"?

The story behind the answer

John James Audubon became famous for The Birds of America, his monumental series of life-size illustrations of North American birds. The work combined artistic drama with detailed observation and helped make Audubon one of the best-known naturalists and bird artists of the nineteenth century.

The original edition was published in sections from 1827 to 1838 in Edinburgh and London. It contained 435 hand-coloured prints depicting 497 bird species. The plates were produced from engraved copper plates, and many illustrations showed birds in energetic, lifelike poses rather than as static scientific specimens.

Audubon financed the project through subscriptions, travelling through Britain and Europe to attract wealthy supporters. The enormous “double-elephant folio” format made the book exceptionally expensive and difficult to produce. An accompanying five-volume text, Ornithological Biography, was written by Audubon with Scottish naturalist William MacGillivray.

A useful distinction is that Audubon was both artist and naturalist, while The Birds of America was the published book itself. His name is also associated with the National Audubon Society, founded decades after his death and named in his honor.
