Which artificial waterway in Panama connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans?

The story behind the answer

The artificial waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans is the Panama Canal.

The canal crosses the Isthmus of Panama, linking the Caribbean Sea—part of the Atlantic system—with the Pacific Ocean. Its locks raise ships to Gatun Lake, an artificial freshwater lake about 26 metres above sea level, before lowering them on the opposite side.

Construction began under France in 1881, but disease, engineering problems, and financial collapse ended that effort. The United States resumed construction in 1904, and the canal opened on 15 August 1914. Panama assumed full control in 1999.

The canal saves ships from sailing around Cape Horn or through the Strait of Magellan. The original locks accommodated Panamax vessels; an expanded set of locks opened in 2016 for larger Neopanamax ships. It is sometimes confused with Egypt’s Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea.
