Salvador Dalí attended Madrid’s San Fernando Academy from 1922.

The institution, officially the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, was Spain’s leading art academy and trained students in drawing, painting and sculpture. Dalí moved to Madrid in 1922 to continue his artistic education there.

During this period he lived at the Residencia de Estudiantes, a university residence that brought him into contact with future cultural figures including Federico García Lorca and Luis Buñuel. Those friendships became important to Spain’s avant-garde culture.

Dalí’s relationship with the academy was turbulent. He was suspended and later expelled after challenging the competence of the examining faculty in 1926. The expulsion did not end his career; it preceded his growing involvement with modernist and Surrealist circles in Paris.
