Which art school did Andy Warhol attend in Pittsburgh?

The story behind the answer

Andy Warhol attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh.

Warhol studied commercial art at the institution, now known as Carnegie Mellon University. He graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. His training was especially important because his first major professional success came through commercial illustration rather than gallery painting.

After graduation, Warhol moved to New York City and worked as a magazine and advertising illustrator. His precise drawing style and use of techniques such as blotted-line illustration became valuable in commercial art before he turned increasingly toward fine art.

The school’s name can cause confusion because it changed later. Carnegie Institute of Technology merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research in 1967, creating Carnegie Mellon University. Warhol attended before that merger.
