Which art movement is most closely associated with Claude Monet?

The story behind the answer

Claude Monet is most closely associated with Impressionism.

Monet was one of the leading French painters who developed Impressionism in the 1860s and 1870s. The movement emphasized changing light, visible brushwork, modern life, and scenes painted outdoors rather than highly polished historical subjects favored by official academic art.

Monet’s 1872 painting Impression, Sunrise helped give the movement its name after critic Louis Leroy used “Impressionist” mockingly in 1874. Monet and his colleagues later adopted the term, which became associated with a major transformation in European painting.

Impressionism is sometimes confused with Post-Impressionism, the later movement associated with artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne. Monet remained fundamentally an Impressionist, although his late water-garden paintings became increasingly experimental and influential.
