Andy Warhol is most closely associated with Pop Art.
Pop Art emerged in Britain and the United States during the 1950s and became especially influential in the 1960s. It drew on advertising, packaging, comic strips, newspapers, celebrities, and other images from mass culture rather than relying only on traditional artistic subjects.
Warhol became one of Pop Art’s best-known figures through works based on Campbell’s soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles, celebrities, and newspaper photographs. His use of silkscreen printing emphasized repetition and made images appear mechanically reproduced.
Warhol was not the only important Pop artist. Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, and James Rosenquist also made major contributions. However, Warhol’s combination of consumer imagery, celebrity culture, and serial production made him the movement’s most recognizable public figure.
