Which Art Deco statue of Jesus overlooks Rio de Janeiro from the summit of Mount Corcovado?
Answer
Christ the Redeemer
Answer
Christ the Redeemer
The Art Deco statue of Jesus overlooking Rio de Janeiro from Mount Corcovado is Christ the Redeemer.
The statue was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted in collaboration with French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski. Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida created the head. Construction took place between 1926 and 1931, and the monument was inaugurated on 12 October 1931.
Christ the Redeemer stands on the summit of the 710-metre Mount Corcovado. The reinforced-concrete statue is clad in soapstone mosaic, a practical surface choice that also produces its distinctive pale appearance. Its outstretched arms span about 28 metres.
The monument became a defining symbol of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. It is sometimes called the world’s largest Art Deco statue, but comparisons depend on how height, pedestal, and artistic classification are measured.
