Which Argentine beat Federer in the 1998 US Open junior final?
Answer
David Nalbandian
Answer
David Nalbandian
David Nalbandian beat Roger Federer in the 1998 US Open junior final. Nalbandian won the boys’ singles championship match 6–3, 7–5 on hard court in New York.
The result was one of Federer’s two junior Grand Slam singles finals in 1998. He won the Wimbledon boys’ singles title earlier that summer, defeating Irakli Labadze, before reaching the US Open final and losing to Nalbandian.
Nalbandian and Federer were both highly regarded prospects. Nalbandian later reached the 2002 Wimbledon final and became one of Argentina’s leading players, while Federer finished 1998 as the ITF junior world No. 1. A common mix-up is Federer’s later Orange Bowl result that year: he defeated Nalbandian there, but lost to Guillermo Coria in the final.
