Rodney Gordon designed the Michael Faraday Memorial at Elephant and Castle.

Gordon was a modern-movement architect who designed the stainless-steel, box-shaped memorial in 1959. It was completed in 1961, creating a strikingly austere landmark in the middle of the northern roundabout of the Elephant and Castle gyratory system.

The structure is more than a monument: its interior houses an electrical substation serving the London Underground’s Northern and Bakerloo lines. Gordon originally intended the transformer equipment to remain visible behind glass, but concerns about vandalism led to the solid metal casing seen today.

The memorial’s connection to Faraday is easy to miss because some explanatory design features were omitted during construction. Its location is meaningful, however: Faraday was born nearby at Newington Butts. The building received Grade II listed status in 1996.
