Which architect designed Brasília’s famous Cathedral of Brasília?

The story behind the answer

Oscar Niemeyer designed Brasília’s famous Cathedral of Brasília.

The cathedral is one of the best-known works created for Brazil’s modernist capital. Niemeyer designed its dramatic hyperboloid structure from curved concrete ribs that rise from a circular base and open toward the sky. Construction began in 1958, and the building was dedicated in 1970.

The interior is reached through a dark underground entrance, creating a strong visual contrast with the bright nave. Large stained-glass panels fill the spaces between the concrete ribs, while suspended angel sculptures add to the soaring effect. The design rejects the traditional rectangular church form.

Lúcio Costa was the urban planner who won the competition for Brasília’s overall city plan, so the two figures are often confused. Niemeyer designed many of the capital’s signature civic buildings, including the National Congress, the Supreme Federal Court and the Palácio da Alvorada.
