The Arab country whose flag has a green cedar tree in the center is Lebanon.
Lebanon’s flag is a horizontal red-white-red triband. The central white stripe is twice the height of each red stripe, and it carries a green cedar of Lebanon, or Cedrus libani. The cedar touches both red bands, making it one of the world’s most recognizable national flag symbols.
The tree has been associated with Lebanon since antiquity. Cedars once covered large areas of the country’s mountains and appear in ancient texts, including the Bible. They became symbols of endurance, longevity, resilience, and national identity; Lebanon is often described as the “Land of the Cedars.”
The modern flag was formally introduced into Lebanon’s Constitution on December 7, 1943, around the country’s independence from the French Mandate. Before 1990, some versions showed a brown trunk, but the design was standardized so the entire cedar is green. The flag’s red stripes are commonly linked with sacrifice, while the white represents peace and Lebanon’s snowy mountains.
