Which Apollo mission was launched on January 31, 1971?

The story behind the answer

Apollo 14 was launched on January 31, 1971.

The mission lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a Saturn V rocket. Liftoff occurred at 4:03 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, after rain showers delayed the launch by about 40 minutes. Its crew was commander Alan Shepard, command-module pilot Stuart Roosa, and lunar-module pilot Edgar Mitchell.

Apollo 14 was the sixth crewed Apollo flight and the fourth mission intended to land astronauts on the Moon. Shepard and Mitchell landed in the lunar module Antares near the Fra Mauro highlands, while Roosa remained in lunar orbit aboard Kitty Hawk. The astronauts conducted surface experiments, collected samples, and used the Modular Equipment Transporter to carry tools and equipment.

Apollo 14 is often confused with Apollo 13 because it followed that mission’s famous aborted landing. Apollo 14 successfully reached the surface, and Shepard famously struck golf balls during the lunar surface activities.
