The mission lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a Saturn V rocket. It was intended to become the third crewed mission to land on the Moon, following Apollo 11 and Apollo 12. The crew consisted of commander Jim Lovell, command-module pilot Jack Swigert, and lunar-module pilot Fred Haise.

About two days after launch, an oxygen tank in the service module exploded. The failure crippled the spacecraft’s electrical power and life-support systems, forcing NASA to abandon the planned lunar landing. The astronauts used the lunar module, Aquarius, as a lifeboat while looping around the Moon.

Apollo 13 returned safely to Earth on April 17, 1970. The mission is often remembered as a successful failure: it did not land on the Moon, but NASA’s engineers and flight controllers brought all three astronauts home despite the catastrophic damage.
