The 2013 animated film featuring the snowman Olaf is Frozen. Produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, the film follows sisters Anna and Elsa in the kingdom of Arendelle.
Olaf is created by Elsa’s magical ice powers, but the character’s origin reaches back to the sisters’ childhood. Anna and Elsa once built a snowman together, and Olaf becomes a living version of that childhood creation after Elsa’s powers transform Arendelle. He dreams of experiencing summer, despite being made of snow, which provides one of the film’s central comic ideas.
Josh Gad voices Olaf in the original English-language film. The character is cheerful, curious, and fascinated by warm-weather life, while also helping express the sisters’ shared memories and lost closeness. His signature song, “In Summer,” imagines what he would do if he ever encountered the season he is least equipped to survive.
Frozen was inspired in part by Hans Christian Andersen’s 1844 fairy tale The Snow Queen, although its characters and plot differ substantially. Olaf is not from Zootopia, Moana, or Tangled; those films feature entirely different settings and casts.
