Which animal is the twelfth and final sign in the Chinese zodiac sequence?

The story behind the answer

The Pig is the twelfth and final sign in the Chinese zodiac sequence.

The standard sequence contains Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The Pig therefore closes the traditional 12-animal cycle before the sequence begins again with the Rat.

In Chinese cultural symbolism, the Pig is often associated with honesty, abundance, prosperity, and comfort. “Boar” is sometimes used as an English translation in descriptions of East Asian zodiac systems, but “Pig” is the standard English name in many modern Chinese-zodiac references.

The zodiac order is not simply a list of biological animals. It is tied to the earthly branches, a traditional calendrical system, and it also appears in systems of years, months, days, and two-hour time periods. A full animal-and-element cycle lasts 60 years.
