The fennec fox is the Sahara’s smallest fox species and has exceptionally large ears that help with cooling.
Its scientific name is Vulpes zerda. The fennec is adapted to hot desert life through several features: large ears that release heat, thick fur that insulates against daytime heat and nighttime cold, and furry footpads that protect its paws from hot sand.
Fennec foxes are mainly nocturnal. They rest in underground dens during the hottest part of the day and emerge at night to hunt insects, rodents, lizards and small birds. They also obtain moisture from food, an important adaptation where free water is scarce.
The species is strongly associated with the Sahara but also occurs in other North African desert regions. Its large ears are not merely an identifying feature; they contain many blood vessels and help transfer body heat to the surrounding air.
