Aslan is the central animal character of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series.
Aslan is a talking lion and the creator, ruler, and spiritual center of Narnia. He appears throughout The Chronicles of Narnia, although his role differs from book to book. His actions include creating Narnia, guiding its human and animal inhabitants, defeating evil, and presiding over the final events of the series.
Lewis presents Aslan as a figure with strong Christian symbolism, but the character remains part of the story’s fantasy world rather than simply appearing as a direct allegorical label. The name is derived from the Turkish word for “lion.”
Aslan is sometimes confused with other memorable Narnian animals. Reepicheep is a brave talking mouse, Mr. Tumnus is a faun, and Puddleglum is a marsh-wiggle. None occupies the same series-wide role as Aslan.
