Which animal is seventh in the traditional Chinese zodiac sequence?

The story behind the answer

The Horse is the seventh animal in the traditional Chinese zodiac sequence.

The twelve-animal cycle places the Horse after the Snake and before the Goat. In the sequence, the animals are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

The Horse is associated with the earthly branch Wu. In traditional Chinese timekeeping, the Horse hour is approximately 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., although exact interpretations can vary by historical system.

The Horse is also seventh in related zodiac traditions in countries such as Korea and Japan. Some regional traditions use “Sheep” or “Ram” for the eighth animal, but the Horse’s position remains unchanged. The twelve-animal order should not be confused with the sixty-year cycle, which combines animals with heavenly stems and elements.
