The Boar appears in Japan’s zodiac where the Chinese zodiac uses the Pig.
The Japanese zodiac is based on the 12-animal cycle introduced from continental East Asia, but some animal names differ in modern usage. Japan traditionally calls the final sign the Boar, while Chinese zodiac lists generally call it the Pig. The Japanese sequence otherwise includes Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, and Dog before Boar.
Japan also commonly uses Sheep for the eighth sign, whereas English-language Chinese zodiac sources often use Goat or Ram. These translation differences can make apparently different lists refer to the same calendrical positions.
The Japanese zodiac year is called eto or junishi in relevant contexts. Like other traditions based on the cycle, its year begins according to the Japanese calendar tradition rather than necessarily on January 1 in historical usage.
