Which angel is said to have revealed the Quran to Muhammad?

The angel said to have revealed the Quran to Muhammad is Gabriel. In Islamic tradition, Gabriel is called Jibril and is regarded as the Angel of Revelation, transmitting God’s messages to prophets. Muslims believe he delivered the Quran to Muhammad gradually rather than all at once.

The first encounter is traditionally placed in 610 CE, when Muhammad was about 40 and retreating in the Cave of Hira near Mecca. Gabriel commanded him to recite, and the opening verses of Surah Al-Alaq, chapter 96, are traditionally identified as the first revelation.

Gabriel is not the same figure as Michael, who is also named in the Quran, or Azrael, commonly associated in Islamic tradition with taking souls. Israfil is traditionally linked with blowing the trumpet at the resurrection. Gabriel also appears in the Hadith of Gabriel, where he questions Muhammad about Islam, faith, and spiritual excellence.
