Answer
Lighthouse of Alexandria
Answer
Lighthouse of Alexandria
The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder located in Alexandria, Egypt, that guided ships into its harbor.
Also called the Pharos of Alexandria, it stood on the island of Pharos beside the city’s harbor. Construction began during the reign of Ptolemy I Soter and was completed under his son, Ptolemy II Philadelphus, probably in the early third century BCE. The architect is traditionally identified as Sostrates of Cnidus, although the historical evidence is debated.
The structure was built in tiers and probably used a fire at the summit, with a reflective surface helping project its light. Ancient writers regarded it as an engineering marvel, and the name Pharos became associated with lighthouses in several languages.
Earthquakes damaged the lighthouse repeatedly between the fourth and fourteenth centuries. Its surviving stones were later reused in the Citadel of Qaitbay, built on the site in the fifteenth century. Unlike the pyramids, the lighthouse no longer survives above ground, but archaeological remains have been found underwater.
