Which ancient wonder was located in Alexandria and traditionally said to guide ships into its harbor?

The story behind the answer

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder said to guide ships into Alexandria's harbor.

Also called the Pharos of Alexandria, the lighthouse stood on the island of Pharos beside Alexandria, Egypt. It was built during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the third century BCE, probably around 280 BCE, to help mariners approach the city's harbor.

Ancient descriptions portray a monumental tower with multiple levels, often reconstructed as a square lower section, an octagonal middle section, and a cylindrical upper section. A fire burned at the top, and reflective material may have been used to project or intensify its light, although details remain uncertain.

Earthquakes damaged the lighthouse over several centuries, and its remains disappeared by the fifteenth century. The name “pharos” became a word for lighthouse in several languages. Unlike the Colossus of Rhodes, which stood in Rhodes, the Pharos was specifically associated with Alexandria's maritime entrance.
