Which ancient wonder was built in Alexandria as a landmark for sailors?

The story behind the answer

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder built as a landmark for sailors.

Also called the Pharos of Alexandria, it stood on the island of Pharos beside the Egyptian city’s harbor. Construction is generally dated to the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, in the third century BCE.

Ancient descriptions portray a very tall, multi-level structure topped by a fire or reflective signal. Its height made it one of the tallest human-made structures of the ancient world and helped ships identify Alexandria’s harbor entrance.

Earthquakes damaged the lighthouse repeatedly over the centuries, and it was eventually destroyed. Some of its stone blocks were reused in the construction of the medieval Fort Qaitbay, which stands near the site today.
