Which ancient wonder was built in Alexandria and served as a lighthouse?

The story behind the answer

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder built in Alexandria to guide ships.

The lighthouse, also called the Pharos of Alexandria, stood on the island of Pharos beside the Egyptian port. Construction is generally associated with the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the third century BCE, and the architect is traditionally identified as Sostratus of Cnidus.

Ancient descriptions portray a multi-level tower topped by a fire and a reflective surface that helped signal the harbour. Earthquakes damaged the structure over several centuries, and its remaining ruins were eventually dismantled. The name Pharos influenced later words for lighthouse in several languages, including French phare and Italian faro. It is distinct from the Colossus of Rhodes, another ancient wonder but a monumental statue.
