Which ancient wonder was built at Olympia in honor of the Greek god Zeus?
Answer
Statue of Zeus
Answer
Statue of Zeus
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was built in honor of the Greek god Zeus.
The enormous seated statue was created by the Greek sculptor Phidias around 430 BCE for the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. It was made using a chryselephantine technique: gold plates covered much of the figure, while ivory represented exposed skin. A wooden framework supported the materials.
Ancient writers described Zeus as approximately 12 meters tall, seated on a richly decorated throne. The statue held a smaller figure of Nike, the goddess of victory, in one hand and a scepter in the other. Its luxury and scale made it one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Olympic Games were held at Olympia in honor of Zeus, but the statue itself was not an athletic trophy. The temple complex suffered after Christianity became dominant in the Roman Empire. The statue was probably moved to Constantinople in the fifth century and was later destroyed, likely in a fire.
