Which ancient wonder stood in the harbor of the Greek island of Rhodes?

The story behind the answer

The Colossus of Rhodes stood in the harbor area of the Greek island of Rhodes.

The Colossus was a gigantic bronze statue of the sun god Helios, created to celebrate Rhodes’s successful resistance to a siege by Demetrius I of Macedon. The sculptor Chares of Lindos is traditionally credited with the work, which was completed around 280 BCE.

The statue stood for only about 54 years before an earthquake toppled it around 226 BCE. Ancient accounts describe its enormous scale, but modern scholars debate its exact pose and location. The popular image of the statue straddling the harbor entrance is almost certainly impossible because of the engineering and geography involved.

The Colossus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its bronze pieces reportedly remained on the ground for centuries, and later traditions claim that an agent of the caliph Muawiya I removed them in the seventh century, though that account is disputed.
